Budding Herbalist sharing my journey discovering the magic of plants

Garlic 🧄

April 5, 2021      Leave a Comment

“If I could have but only one herb, it would have to be garlic.” – John Heinerman, medical anthropologist

The versatility, potency and availability make garlic a very powerful herb to get to know.

I’ve been reading into garlic & it’s fascinating! It has strong antiviral & antibacterial powers that, in Heinerman’s book, is said to stand up against any modern antibiotic drug. He goes on to say that whatever conventional antibiotics can do, garlic can do better & safer. Such a bold claim in my opinion! He goes on to explain that bacteria is unable to adapt to garlic’s potency. No wonder it’s been used for thousands of years!

If you’re feeling a cold come on, have a sore throat, a toothache, infection or even looking for a cancer prevention, grab some garlic. When chewed, the important sulfur compounds are released and absorbed into the body.

Here’s an easy recipe to make & have on-hand to take at first sign of cold or flu:

✨ organic, peeled garlic cloves

✨ raw local honey

✨ apple cider vinegar

✨ in a jar place the garlic, cover with honey, add a splash of apple cider vinegar to keep the pH levels where they need to be to avoid growth of harmful spores

✨ loosely add a lid & flip and shake everyday for about 4 weeks, you’ll start to see bubbles (that’s when it’s ready)

✨ eat 1 clove of honey garlic 4 times a day at onset of infection to help reduce symptoms & duration of illness

✨ store in a jar with lid for up to 3 months

✨ you can also use a pH meter to ensure proper level of 4.6 and below before consuming

Let thy food be thy medicine & medicine be thy food ✨🧄

Happy 1st day of fall!! 🍂 🍁

I opened my windows this morning & as the cool breeze rolled through, I thought, today would be a great day to share this project!

Some of you may have seen it in @willowandsagemag but for those of you who haven’t, this fun DIY is one to try!

The simple art of naturally dyeing fabric is fun, each piece is unique, and you feel connected to nature while doing it. These two pantry spices are an all natural way to add color to fabric. The subtle cinnamon mixes with rich coffee to create a lovely antique stain.

What we put on our bodies, whether skincare or clothes is important. Finding ways to cut down chemical exposure is something I’m trying to implement more.

Here’s a step by step to create your own:
✨🍂 prepare the fabric you’re going to use, a mordant bath & vinegar soak is what I did. Check my reels to see an example of this process
✨🍂 get your natural dye pot ready - I used a large pot and filled it half way with water and added in 1/2 cup cinnamon chips & 1/2 cup dark roast ground coffee. Let that simmer. When the color changes from clear to a deep amber color, it’s time to add the fabrics!
✨🍂 have fun creating patterns with rubber bands or clamps, or place the whole fabric in by itself if you don’t want any white spaces. Allow the fabric to sit in the dye bath anywhere from a couple hours to overnight depending on how deep you want the color to turn out.
✨🍂 remove from dye bath, lightly rinse and ring it out and then let it air dry.

I love the stain, the design, even the smell! Happy fall y’all!! 🍎 🍁🎃💛

Back to school cool ⚡️ Why oh why haven’t I Back to school cool ⚡️
Why oh why haven’t I done this one yet??! Literally 3 ingredients & 10 minutes of your time. No harsh chemicals, no over powering perfume smells and easy to wash out formula. This one is a save for later type recipe share 👌

Easy pomade recipe:
⚡️ 2 tablespoons of beeswax
⚡️ 2 tablespoons of coconut oil
⚡️ 1 teaspoon of arrowroot powder
⚡️ 5 drops EO of choice (optional)

Melt the beeswax in a double boiler or makeshift one by putting a measuring cup inside a pot with water filled 1/2 way. Add coconut oil and melt together. Remove from heat, pour into tin or jar and quickly add arrowroot powder and stir. Add essential oil drops and stir again. Let pomade cool. When ready to use, a little goes a long way.

This stuff is awesome! Perfect hold, not too stiff, not too greasy. PLUS the shelf life is 1 year, so a little jar will get you through the school year 📚 🍎

This sun tea is full of vitamin c, refreshing taste and the little boost we all need as summer is starting to wind down.

Make this for an uplifting, nourishing and replenishing drink on a hot day ☀️

Vitamin C Sun Tea:
✨ 1/4 cup hibiscus 🌺: packed with vitamin c

✨ 1 tablespoon nettle 🌿: a boost of minerals & vitamins

ICYMI… did you see my newest blog post up on @herbalacademy website? It’s an easy & oh so effective recipe to beat the heat 🔥

Summer is a blessing and a curse. There’s nothing better than playing out under the sun’s warm rays, but a little too long in the sun can cause skin damage. But have no fear, herbalism is here! Beat the heat and soothe sunburns this summer with a cooling and soothing frozen calendula (Calendula officianalis) infused aloe vera (Aloe vera) gel ice cube. This recipe for DIY frozen aloe and calendula cubes will come in handy after the long days spent in the garden, the afternoons by the sea, or those children’s parties that seem to always be scheduled during heat waves.

The full how-to can be found in my stories or link in my bio 💛

A message to my younger self…

Even though for years you doubted yourself. You thought you were not great at anything. You didn’t feel you had a passion. Welp! It turns out you just needed a little more time to figure it all out, but in the end, it all works out just fine!

I love a good simmer pot! What you may not have thought was, I even love them during warmer months as well! Sometimes we think of these just for Fall & Winter, but in this post I hope to change your mind. As the water bubbles up, herbs 🌿 & fruit 🍋 & spices 🧂 dance around making pops of sweet aroma. Hydration for these hot summer days ☀️

Summertime is for picnics, bbqs, beach days, water play & outside fun! But, all of these take a toll not only on our skin, but our hair too. This recipe gives your hair a big ole drink of moisture, providing hydration, shine and some TLC ✨

Just a few pantry ingredients are needed to make this hair mask & you probably already have them all!

Here’s what I did:
✨ start by creating a luscious infused oil using coconut oil & rosemary. I made an 8 ounce batch for this. Your hair will love these two! Rosemary helps stimulate hair growth & helps scalp health. Coconut oil will give your hair moisture & shine. I used the crockpot method to create the oil. If you want a step-by-step - check out my blog!
✨ Next, using a blender, add in about 4 avocados. These babies are going to coat your hair with rich hydration and will bring dry hair back to life!
✨ once the infused oil is done, strain & add it to the blender with the avocado. Mix it all up until creamy.
✨ pour into silicone molds, the ones I used have the look of a comb, it helps run through your hair (a little tough to pop out not going to lie, you’ll see some not so perfect ones at the end).
✨ place the molds into the freezer, I like to freeze these to prevent browning.
✨ once frozen, pop them out & use on clean wet hair. Leave the hair mask on for about 5-10 mins, then rinse out.

Get ready for shine ✨ & healthy hair!!
