Acid + honey + nutrients

Oxymels are one of my favorite ways to create an herbal remedy! Combining these powerful bases, that come with their own long list of benefits, with an herb like nettle, makes for a recipe you all have to try! 🌿

Click the link in my bio, I wrote up a blog post on this. Detailing the benefits, uses & shelf life. But I also wanted to briefly summarize some of the benefits here:

🌿 Nettle: high antioxidants content, helps with inflammation and histamine response. Also super nutrient rich.
🌿 Apple cider vinegar: acid pulls out herb’s beneficial properties, ACV is full of good bacteria, perfect for gut health.
🌿 Raw honey: soothes a dry throat, full of nutrients & high sugar content helps the shelf life of your herbal creation.

The folk methods of herbalism is so forgiving. You can alter this recipe to your own preference and still yield the same benefits! I like to do a 1:1 ratio of vinegar to honey. Some add more honey vs vinegar, or vice versa.

Elderflower cordial + preserving them into cubes
I was pushing my son on a swing at our campground. Mid swing, I tell my husband “I’m going to go check out a bush, I’ll be right back” 😂 his face. But as I got closer I knew I just struck gold. A giant elder! For the first time I got to forage fresh flowers to turn it into something special.

It’s hard to believe the tiny elderflowers have such a strong, sweet aroma, but they sure do! As powerful as their smell, is the power of their beneficial properties. Mostly known for being antiviral, elderflower is such a help when you’re dealing with a sinus cold or respiratory issues. Because it is anti inflammatory, elderflower can reduce inflammation of sinus tissue and allow for the movement of congestion. - THE HERBARIUM (link in bio)

This recipe highlights everything you’d want from fresh foraged elderflowers. A cordial is a sweet medicinal tonic that extracts the beneficial properties all the while tasting pleasant.

Here’s how I made elderflower cordial:
✨ start by collection about 10 heads of elderflower blossoms, rinse throughly, you can’t imagine how many bugs 🐜 I got out of mine! Let them dry.
✨ in a 32 ounce jar, place the blossoms, stems removed.
✨ pour in 1 cup of raw honey 🍯 yes honey! I opted to do this instead of sugar, if you’ve been around a while, you know I love honey for the taste AND benefits.
✨ next, add in about 4 slices of organic lemon 🍋
✨ fill the rest of the jar with warm water & mix well until the honey dissolves
✨ cover & let sit for 2 days
✨ it’s normal for the flowers to brown a little!
✨ strain out the flowers & tada 🎉 you have an elderflower cordial!

You can use this as is, much like a syrup. Perfect to add to lemonade, cocktails or a splash in mineral water. To take it a step further, freeze some up like I did! Pouring the cordial into an ice tray preserves the sweet liquid. Not to mention, how perfect for portion sizing your drink! I use 2 cordial cubes, then fill the rest of my cup up with sparkling water. It’s delicious! Keep your unfrozen cordial in the fridge & it will last a couple weeks.

YOU GUYS I DID IT! I made sourdough bread for the very first time & I’m so excited! It was on my 2022 goal list - whew it was quite the process, but look at how it all came out. AND I made homemade herb butter AND floral infused honey to spread on top 😋 this is a spring snack you’ll want to save & try 💛

I think I’ve found the perfect bite! Soft chewy, warm sourdough bread with a powerful rosemary garlic butter, balanced by a sweet floral honey. WOW, is it good! All homemade too using some local small businesses (even better). The sourdough steps are way too many to try & explain here, but check out @ferm.farm I bought their 200 year old 😳 sourdough starter & followed their online recipe to make the bread. For a 1st timer, I think it came out great! For the butter, swipe the photos for a little step by step & check out @raw_farm_by_op for the most delicious cream to use. For the floral honey, I was lucky enough to visit @ocmicrofarm & take home some edible flowers. What better way to use them than infusing in honey & pretty garnish!

Here’s what I did:
✨ start by making sourdough bread, I got my starter from @ferm.farm
✨ next, make your own herb butter, I added rosemary & garlic to mine & it’s out of this world delicious! (Pictures for step by step)
✨ lastly, infuse some edible flowers like these violas into raw local honey for a couple days, perfect for drizzling on breads, yogurts & more
✨ assemble them together & you have the most perfect bite!!

I could sit under this tree all day snack on this spring treat. Listening to the hummingbirds zip by and watch the occasional butterfly find a flower to perch on. I’m just so excited that I can finally say I’ve made sourdough (🤗) & my goodness I didn’t realize how easy it was to make butter. Can you tell I love this recipe?

Guess what’s coming up…. Mother’s Day! I have the perfect way to make mama feel special, and honestly, we all could use this for ourselves too 🧖‍♀️ 💕

The days are long, but the years are short is a saying so true, it can almost define parenthood! Sleepless nights during infancy, navigating the rough waters of toddlerhood, answering the infinite questions of a young developing mind, tending the delicate balance of raising a teen, and managing the worries of a young adult child building their own life means being a mom is a challenging rollercoaster of a job.

This beautiful floral-inspired facial care kit is a perfect way to make time for yourself or to give as a Mother’s Day gift as a way to express your love and appreciation to mom or the mother figures in your life.

Check out my newest @herbalacademy blog to read how you can make;
✨ a floral facial steam
✨ a rose clay mask
✨ a chamomile hydrosol spray
✨ a calendula infused facial oil

Link in my bio & on stories!!

From start to finish, your loved one will be enveloped in plant magic. Bursts of florals, a cleansing of clay, soothing sprays of chamomile, and a finish of liquid gold make a kit that’s sure to be a hit! (P.S. My tip is to double the batch and keep one for yourself!)

I get asked a lot what you can use to replace beeswax in many herbal creations. I’ve read other blog posts & had the answer, but had yet to create with it myself!

I finally tried it out & have all the insight now. This vegan body balm is a great alternative to beeswax if you’re wanting to offer to someone who doesn’t use any animal products, or is allergic to beeswax 🐝

The key ingredient 🔑 Carnauba wax
This plant based wax comes from the leaves of the Brazilian palm tree 🌴 When melted & used in salves, chapstick, lotion bars, or other herbal creations, it acts as your binder much like beeswax does.

A couple call outs that I noticed when using carnauba wax, the melting point is higher than beeswax. Meaning, it takes a little longer and higher heat to get the consistency you want. I typically melt the wax first anyway, but wanted to point that out. Secondly, the texture or feel you get when you glide it on your skin is a bit different. Lastly, in terms of smell, it isn’t overpowering which is great! I found a brand on Amazon that offered - organic, sustainably harvested & affordable price point.

Here’s a recipe to try, I love body balms! They provide rich moisture, a lovely scent and make wonderful gifts 💕

Vegan body balm:
✨ The first step before creating is to have an infused herbal oil. For this, I will be using my chamomile that’s been infused in sweet almond oil.
✨ In a double boiler add in 1 tablespoon of carnauba wax. Let that melt down completely.
✨ Next, add in 3 ounces of chamomile infused oil & give it a stir.
✨ Add in 1 ounce of coconut oil & give it a stir.
✨ lastly, after all the ingredients have melted together, turn off the heat. Next add in about 5 drops of lavender essential oil & give it one last stir.
✨ Pour your liquid into either silicone molds or tins, let it cool & harden. Takes about an hour or two.
✨ your vegan body balm will have a shelf life of about 6 months to 1 year if stored in a tight container 🫙

Trying new things to create is fun! I’m happy with how they turned out & theres another option that works just like beeswax!

Has anyone worn shorts yet this year? It’s starting to get hot where I live. Actually, let’s be honest, SoCal only has 1 season haha! But, I can definitely feel those consistent warmer days coming ☀️

I whipped up this incredible body scrub to give my skin, that’s been hiding under long sleeves and pants, some much needed attention. Scrubs are wonderful for exfoliating dead skin, removing impurities, softening your skin, and even helping with movement & blood flow! ✨

I love the base of this scrub! The brown sugar is a great natural abrasive to use. The oil mixed in will give you a moisturizing glow & the secret weapon - frankincense is absolutely fantastic for skincare! It restores, calms & soothes most skin conditions.

This would also make a perfect gift! Think Mother’s Day, baby shower, birthday, etc 💕

Brown sugar scrub:
✨ I used a 1:1 ratio, 1 cup of brown sugar to 1 cup of infused oil. My infused oil was rose in sweet almond oil, it’s divine!!
✨ in a bowl I simply mixed the brown sugar & rose oil. I opted to not strain out the dried roses. This is completely optional, but I just liked the extra scrub factor it brings 🌹
✨ next add in 5 drops of frankincense essential oil & mix again.
✨ pour your scrub mix into a jar with a lid & that’s it!

This brown sugar scrub is perfect for special skin treatment days & I keep it in my bathroom. The shelf life is about 3 months & a little goes a long way. Your skin after use will feel silky smooth and will be ready for those warmer days ahead ☀️✨

The sun beckons, the call of the warm rays is loud and inviting. Your skin has been waiting to drink in its nutrients. Warmer weather invites a new line up of skincare products. This sun-kissed oil will be your new go-to, I promise!!

A naturally golden glow using none other than the herb of the sun herself - calendula. This bright, vibrant flower when infused in oil creates a liquid rich in benefits. Calendula’s anti-inflammatory & astringent actions combined with its antibacterial & antifungal properties make it a common choice for a wide variety of skin issues.

Pairing calendula with mica makes for a liquid gold giving you a magic glow. Mica is a naturally occurring mineral found in stones. The stones when crushed, creates a beautiful, sparkly, powder perfect to add to skincare and makeup. The shimmer is subtle as it glides onto your skin, a perfect balance of shine that glistens without being too over the top.

Here is how to get a kissed by the sun look ☀️

Sun-kissed shimmer oil recipe:
✨ first prepare a batch of calendula infused avocado oil. Simply take a large 32 ounce glass jar and fill it 3/4 of the way up with dried calendula flowers.
✨ next, add avocado oil to the jar filling it to the top leaving a little bit of room. Place a piece of wax paper and secure a lid.
✨ allow this jar of calendula infused oil to macerate for a minimum of 4 weeks.
✨ after the 4 weeks have passed, it is time to strain you’re beautiful liquid!
✨ in a bowl pour in about 2 cups of calendula infused oil, next add in 1 tablespoon of gold mica powder.
✨ whisk and mix the two together. Some separating will occur, but nothing a little shaking can’t help once it’s bottled up!
✨ using the dropper simply squeeze the oil onto your hands and rub it on your body, those legs are going to light up and glow giving you a just kissed by the sun look!

Your skin is going to feel and look nourished, moisturized, healthy, and not to mention provide a little extra soothing benefits all the while looking sparkly and vibrant! ☀️✨

After meal digestive help

Who’s ready for an easy recipe with big benefits?? I sure am. Spring makes me want to feel light & energetic. Sometimes I might need a little extra help after meals to get the spring in my step back. This recipe brings in the powerful digestive helper - GINGER ✨

Fun fact: Gingerol, a natural component of ginger root, benefits gastrointestinal motility ― the rate at which food exits the stomach and continues along the digestive process. Eating ginger encourages efficient digestion, so food doesn’t linger as long in the gut.

Save & make ginger jello to have after your meals. It’s made with clean ingredients & has such a spicy sweet flavor, even my 5 year old loves it! 💥

Ginger jello:
✨start by heating 2 cups of water in your kettle. While that’s warming, add 2 scoops of ginger powder to a bowl or large measuring cup. My ginger powder is from @frontiercoop
✨ next, pour in the hot water from the kettle & whisk away.
✨ in a separate cup, add about 4 ounces of cold water, then add in 3 scoops of gelatin. I use beef gelatin for all the wonderful amino acids and natural collagen benefits. Plus! Beef gelatin helps with digestion as well 🙌🏼This will sit for a minute or two and will start to congeal.
✨ now that the ginger water is slightly cooled but still warm, add in 3 scoops of honey, I love @heirloomacrehoney it’s so delicious! Whisk until combined.
✨ take your gelatin cup and mix it into the ginger cup & whisk together.
✨ you can pour this jello mixture directly into little bowls, a cake pan or silicone molds. Just be sure to grease them first with coconut oil!
✨ place in fridge for a couple hours to firm up & enjoy after dinner to help you digest all that good food!

This particular recipe is the epitome of garden-to-table eating. Plucked from the ground and drizzled onto your plate, a delicious herbal spring vinegar infusion is a seasonal recipe you won’t want to miss out on making!

My favorite garden bloom + one you wouldn’t think to use + a wild one full of flavor. This vinegar is SO GOOD 😋 and has so many unique benefits. Infused vinegars are a great way to pull out herbal constituents. The time they need to infuse is less than an herbal oil & the flavor combos are endless. You need to give it a try!

Ginger, lemon balm, & blackberry recipe

Have you heard of a switchel? All the way back to the 1700’s, this was the drink of choice among farmers. Those hot days of working under the sun needed an equally strong drink to stand up to the heat & quench your thirst. Enter the switchel. Made of apple cider vinegar, ginger & a sweetener, you got yourself a refreshing & replenishing drink 💦

@farmersalmanac has a great blog on why this drink combination came about (I’ll link in my stories). For me, the most important takeaway of why to make a switchel, were the benefits. ACV has the acidity & is high in potassium- which gives our body those electrolytes that are lost. Ginger has the spice & is anti inflammatory- perfect for labor intensive activities. Lastly, the raw honey adds the sweetness & also rich in minerals, all things our body needs to replenish. You can also use molasses or maple syrup to sweeten.

To try this old time sports drink to help replenish minerals, electrolytes & give your body the boost it needs, here’s a DELICIOUS switchel recipe to save, swipe photos!
